Aluminum needs more surface prep than fiberglass and a placement that avoids rivet lines and seams. Clean and de-oxidize the area, choose a color that clearly contrasts with bare or camo aluminum, and press the vinyl firmly along every ridge.

Bare aluminum oxidizes into a chalky film that adhesive will not grip. Scrub with soap and water, wipe with isopropyl alcohol, and keep wiping until the cloth comes away clean. Painted aluminum only needs a wash and an alcohol wipe.
Pick a band on the forward half of the hull that is as flat as possible and stay off rivet lines where you can. Where a character must cross a ridge, warm the vinyl slightly and press it into the contour with a thumb before squeegeeing.
Unpainted aluminum is mid-tone, and camo patterns break up outlines — both make a plain black or white number harder to read. Every state requires the characters to contrast with the background, so choose the color that reads cleanly against your specific finish.
Hull material does not alter the requirement: at least 3 inches, plain vertical block characters, both sides of the forward half, reading left to right, with the state's separation between groups.
Aluminum holds cold. Apply above 50°F on a hull that has warmed up — a cold metal surface will not let the adhesive tack, and edges lift within days.
