Short answer
Bass boat registration numbers are 3-inch block characters on the forward half of both sides, above the waterline. The complication on a bass boat is visual, not structural: the forward hull is usually covered in a metal-flake or wrapped graphic, so the number has to be placed in the calmest area of that graphic and in a color that stays legible against it.
Bass boats have plenty of flat forward hull to work with, which makes them one of the easier hulls to letter — the decisions are about graphics and contrast.
Because the hull sides are long, an off-center or low placement is very visible from the dock. Measuring both sides from the bow is what keeps the pair matched.

Color on this hull: Against dark metal-flake — the usual bass boat scheme — white reads from the farthest distance. Black works only where the forward panel is a genuinely light, low-contrast area.
Metal-flake, wraps and contrast
Metal-flake gelcoat is smooth and takes vinyl well, but its sparkle scatters light and visually eats thin, dark lettering. Solid white characters hold their shape against it from a distance.
If your boat is wrapped rather than gelcoated, keep the number set inside one section of wrap and off any overlap seam. Applying registration vinyl over a wrap seam means the whole set comes off with the wrap later.
Where the numbers go on a bass boat
Forward half of both sides, above the waterline and above the top strake, on the smoothest area of the graphic.
- Keep the set off the strake — spray and flex along that line lift character edges.
- Do not run lettering across a wrap seam or a graphic overlap.
- Keep clear of the trolling motor mount and any bow cleat hardware.
- Set the same distance from the bow on both sides; the long hull side makes a mismatch obvious.

Installing on a bass boat
- 1Strip wax completely — show-polished bass boat gelcoat is the most heavily waxed surface we see, and vinyl will not bond through it.
- 2Wipe with isopropyl alcohol and let it flash off.
- 3Tape-hinge the whole set, sight it against the rub rail from ten feet away, then commit.
- 4Squeegee in overlapping strokes from the hinge downward.
- 5Peel the transfer tape back on itself slowly at a sharp angle.
