State Compliance Guide
Every motorized vessel operated on Florida public waters must display its FL-prefixed registration number on both sides of the forward half of the hull, along with the current Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) validation decal. The rules cover letter height, font, color contrast, separator style, and exactly where the validation decal sits relative to the number. These are checked routinely by FWC officers on the water.
Numbers must be at least 3 inches tall in plain, vertical block characters. No italics, no script, no shadowed or outlined fonts. Stroke width must be heavy enough that the number is readable from 100 feet.
Characters must contrast sharply with the hull. White or light hulls require dark numbers; dark hulls require light numbers. Reflective or domed vinyl is permitted as long as contrast holds in daylight.
A space or hyphen equal to the width of a character must separate the FL prefix, digit group, and suffix letters. Example: FL 1234 AB or FL-1234-AB.
The current FWC validation decal must be affixed within 6 inches of the registration number on both sides of the hull, in line with the number. Most owners place it directly aft of the suffix letters.
Numbers go on both sides of the forward half of the vessel, above the waterline, reading left to right, in an unobstructed location that is clearly visible from the side.
At least 3 inches tall, in plain vertical block letters and numbers.

Either is accepted, as long as the gap equals the width of a character. FL 1234 AB and FL-1234-AB both comply.
Yes. FL-prefixed numbers are tied to the hull for its lifetime and transfer to the new owner with the vessel.
