Jet Ski Registration Numbers
Short answer
A jet ski (personal watercraft) displays the same registration numbers as any other vessel: 3-inch block characters, on the forward half of both sides, in a color that contrasts with the hull, read left to right. The difference is the surface — PWC bond rails and side panels are short, steeply curved and often covered in factory graphics, so the numbers usually go on the flattest panel above the footwell and the color has to be chosen against the graphic, not the base gelcoat.
Personal watercraft are registered like any other motorized vessel, so the number set is the same size and format as a bass boat's — but the place you put it is much smaller and rarely flat.

Color on this hull: Most PWC hulls carry multi-color factory graphics. White reads cleanly on black, dark blue and red panels; black is the safer choice only where the panel is genuinely light and unpatterned.
The PWC surface problem
A jet ski side panel curves in two directions at once — it falls away toward the bond rail and rolls inward toward the bow. Vinyl will conform to a single-direction curve without help, but a compound curve is where lettering tents and lifts at the character edges.
Individual pre-spaced characters handle this far better than a one-piece decal, because each character only has to sit on the small patch of hull directly beneath it. That is how registration lettering is cut, and it is why you should never try to reposition a whole PWC set as one sheet.
Where the numbers go on a jet ski
The forward half of the craft, on both sides, above the waterline — measured from the bow, not from the seat. On most stand-up and sit-down PWC that lands on the panel between the front of the seat and the handlebar pod.
- Keep the whole set on one panel — do not let characters cross a seam, a molded step or the bond rail.
- Stay clear of the fuel filler and the tow eye; both get handled and both catch a lifting edge.
- Avoid running lettering over a raised factory graphic edge — that ridge is where water gets under the vinyl.
- Check your state's rule for where the validation decal sits relative to the number before you place either.
Character height, spacing, prefix format and validation-decal position are set by your state. Check your state's requirements.
Installing on a PWC
- 1Wash and then wipe the panel with isopropyl alcohol — PWC panels usually carry more polish and sunscreen residue than a hull side.
- 2Tape-hinge the set along the top edge while it is still on the transfer tape, then step back and check it against the seat line, not the ground; the craft sits nose-up on most trailers.
- 3Work from the middle of the set outward on a curved panel so the two ends have somewhere to go.
- 4Squeegee each character individually, then thumb-press the outer corners of the first and last characters.
- 5Keep it off the water for 24 hours if you can — PWC hulls flex, and a green adhesive bond plus flex is what lifts corners.

Jet ski / PWC registration questions
Do jet skis need registration numbers?
Yes. Personal watercraft are motorized vessels and every state requires them to be registered and to display the assigned number and validation decal, in the same 3-inch contrasting block characters used on any other powerboat.
Can I put my PWC numbers on the front cover instead of the sides?
No. The number must be displayed on both sides of the forward half of the craft so it is readable from either side on the water. A front-cover-only placement is not a legal display.
Will vinyl stick to a jet ski's factory graphics?
It will, provided the graphic is smooth and fully bonded. Avoid the raised edge of a graphic, and never apply over a lifting or peeling factory decal.
