How does transfer tape work on registration decals?
Transfer tape is the paper or clear film over the front of the letters. It holds every character in the correct spacing while you position and apply the set, then peels away, leaving only the vinyl on the hull.

Why spacing depends on it
Your number is cut as individual characters. The transfer tape is what keeps the state-required separation between prefix, numerals and suffix exact, so the layout you approved is the layout that lands on the hull.
Peeling it off correctly
After squeegeeing, peel the transfer tape back on itself at a sharp angle — close to 180 degrees — slowly, starting at a top corner. Pulling straight out from the hull is what lifts characters.
If a character lifts with the tape
Stop, lay the tape back down over that character, re-squeegee firmly through the tape, and resume peeling from a different corner. Warm weather and a firm squeegee pass solve nearly every lift.
Dry versus wet application
Dry application is standard and what we recommend for a 3-inch registration set. A light soapy-water wet application buys repositioning time on a large set but needs longer to bond before the transfer tape comes off.

Do I leave the transfer tape on?
No. It comes off once the vinyl is squeegeed down. Leaving it on traps dirt and will discolor.
The transfer tape is not releasing — what now?
Re-squeegee the whole set through the tape and peel more slowly at a sharper angle. Warmth helps; cold vinyl resists release.
Can I reuse transfer tape?
It can be laid back down mid-application to rescue a lifted character, but it is not meant for a second full application.
